📜 How to Write Signal Numerals™

Turn plain numbers into visual representations of scale. The method is similar to Roman Numerals:

Positive Signal

Geometric symbols represent a positive value scale (in blue) from a tiny signal dot · to a starburst

Negative Signal

The same geometric symbols appear in red for negative values, from a tiny signal dot · to a starburst

Strictly additive

Symbols are always largest-first. Unlike Roman Numerals, nothing is prefixed for subtraction.

Async uncertainty

Initialization and unknown values use the wildcard until a numeric state is available

Find the largest tier symbol

Similar to Roman Numerals, start with the highest symbol that fits the value (see Signal Numerals™ dictionary).

Append the symbol

Keep appending the same symbol without overshooting the value then switch to the next lower tier symbol.

Repeat to zero

Continue appending until no numeric remainder exists. You never need more than 4 of the same symbol.

Signal Numerals™ is an entirely new Base 1/5/10 numerical system inspired by Roman numerals.

It aligns with modern decimal (Base-10) milestones while ensuring no single symbol has to repeat more than four times. Unlike Roman Numerals, Signal Numerals™ is strictly additive with no subtraction. For example, 4 is written as ···· not ·•. Translated to Roman Numerals, this is the equivalent of saying we use IIII instead of IV.

Emoji-based UI

Fire Numerals uses distinctive fire and ice emojis that feel expressive and memorable. Positive and negative scales use different symbol sets, which doubles the dictionary length but gives each polarity its own visual story. Emojis are more aesthetically rich, though each platform may render them slightly differently.

Signal Numerals™

Geometric shape-based UI

Signal Numerals uses generic geometric shapes that color cleanly. Positive and negative values can share the same symbol in two colors such as blue and red — a clear symmetry advantage with half as many glyphs to learn. The tradeoff is that geometric shapes are less aesthetically pleasing than emojis and may be less memorable.
